Upgrade Your Bedroom

I hope you are spending 8 hours in your bedroom each day! If not, it is likely the room you spend the most time in sleeping, dressing for the day and putting away laundry! Therefore, it should arguably be the most comfortable. Many people are willing to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a nice hotel room, but they will not spend the same amount on their primary bedroom. Why not make your primary bedroom feel like a vacation destination? In today's blog I am sharing ways you can easily upgrade your bedroom to feel like a luxury hotel room.

Bedroom Must-Haves

  • Down pillows: These are the fluffy pillows you melt into on hotel beds. They maintain their shape and fluff. You can read more about pillows in my Pillow Talk blog post.

  • 100% Tencel sheets: Tencel sheets are silky, soft and cool feeling. My favorite thing about tencel sheets are their cool feel on my body because I get hot at night. Even if you don't you will love how tencel sheets drape over your body, without clinging or sticking to you.

  • Large night stands: I suggest purchasing kid's dressers and using them as night stands if you have the space. We are all guilty of piling things on our night stands. This way you have a place for books, reading glasses, a water glass, your cell phone, a beautiful bouquet of flowers and of course a large lamp. (Note: I have yet to find the perfect, large night stands for my bedroom).

  • 30" or above lamps: A lamp is a sculptural element and piece of artwork. Be sure to select beautiful, substantial lamps to decorate your space and provide ample light for reading in bed. Lamps also cast beautiful shadows of warmth to create a calm feeling.

  • A place to sit: A place to sit that is not the bed helps keep everyday dirt off the bed. Plus in a hotel room there is always a place to sit. The alternate sitting area can be as simple as a fabric stool or as elaborate as a chase, ottoman and table. The size of a sitting area all depends on the amount of space available in the bedroom.

  • Entertainment: The specific type of entertainment is up to you, but I suggest having books in the bedroom that work as decor and leisurely reading. Televisions are great too. I was against them in the bedroom for awhile, and now wish I got one sooner. I love mine. It is relaxing to fall asleep watching my favorite show and not having to wake up in the middle of the night to move upstairs to bed. There's also a childlike wonder with having a television in a bedroom. Watching tv in bed always feels like a treat.

  • Window treatments: You need both blinds and drapes. Blinds protect the windows and are the functional way to keep light out, while drapes soften the sharp lines of windows and decorate the room. I prefer blackout blinds and drapes to keep light out anytime of the day, especially since I get migraines often and need to rest in a dark room.

  • Candle: Pick a smell that relaxes you and eliminates any odor that might be coming from an attached bathroom. Kidding, but seriously smell is so important to relaxation and the light of a candle makes a room look beautiful.

  • Carpet: If you don't or can't have carpet in your bedroom, simply add a large rug. Carpet in the bedroom adds warmth and sound proofs the room.

  • Blankets: Layer them at the end of the bed. You can never have enough. We all know getting out of bed in the middle of the night is no fun, so do yourself a favor and layer your bed with a variety of blankets, quilts, sheets and duvet covers.

  • Nature: Any natural element like trees, flowers, or even a river rock waterfall that plugs into an outlet. Your plants can be real or faux. I opt for faux since I can't keep plants alive, nor do I want to worry about replacing them. The natural world in your bedroom adds a touch of peace and serenity to your dwelling space.

  • Mirrors: They help a room look larger and brighter, by reflecting light. However, do not let mirrors be the only decor on your walls. I love having mirrors in my bedroom to reflect light and check my outfit out before heading out for my day.

As you can see, even my bedroom is a work in progress! You don't have to upgrade your bedroom all in one day. I am currently looking for longer draperies, large night stands and more artwork for the walls.
